Apple Picking

The first week back to work seems to have been a success. Sarah did a great job during the day, not that I would have expected anything else. But it must have been quite a change to be home alone with the kids for the first time in four months.

Emily started walking this week. She had taken steps before but it took some convincing to get her going. Once I went back to work she stood up and started walking without hesitation. She's a lot more stable than when Liam started walking. I guess partly because she's older and has a better sense of balance.

We just finished apple picking. Apparently the apples are 3 weeks early this year. The woman at the farm said this is probably the last week for macs. If you're looking for macs you'd better get out there.

Speaking of apples here's my rant for the week. Feel free to skip it. I bought an iPad last week and I must admit it's probably the most frustrating purchase I've ever made. My first issue was why do I need to connect my 'computer' to a desktop to get it to work? I knew ahead of time that I'd have to do this but I was not prepared for what came next. Next I had to update iTunes, a program I never use. Updating to a newer version of iTunes doesn't sound difficult but if you live in the country it can take a long time, even with 'high speed'.

Next problem: my newer iPad needs new software, which shouldn't be too difficult. Click on the 450MB file and let let it download. The only problem was that the several connections I tried kept timing out. Another reason the ipad was not designed for rural setup. Finally after a trip to the public library I had the file and was ready to go.

Next problem: the plan I want is not available through the activation process. Here's where things get really frustrating. I call my isp and nobody seems to know what I'm talking about. 'But sir you have to activate the ipad by following the instructions online' after explaining to several people what's going on I get transfered to a department (at 9:00 pm) only to hear 'our offices are closed'. There goes an hour of my life.

To make a long story even longer, I ended up calling the isp every day of the week. At one point I was told that my sim card had already been activated as a pay as you go card and that I'd have to buy a new one. I explained to the woman on the phone that any activation was done by them and not by me so they needed to fix it. She got a programmer on the other line who was able to fix it after some time. She told me I had to go online and download the software again. Luckily the process recognized that I already had the files so it was much quicker.

Once the process was completed the device still didn't work. I called back again and after a couple of hours and a disconnection we were all set (until I handed it over to Sarah). Luckily it started working again the next morning.

I'm not saying don't buy an ipad, but:

a) You need a fast Internet connection
b) Wireless iPad shouldn't be any trouble
c) If you' re going to share a data plan expect huge delays. It seems very few employees know about this or how to do it.

On a positive note the phone had been absolutely spectacular. Everyday I find new uses for it. Pretty soon I'll haver it trained to go to work for me.
